Mirza Sahiban told the classic love story in the lines of Sirhin Farhad,Laila Majnu,Sohni Mahiwal. Each and every song of this film released in the year of partition of Indian Sub-continent is exquisite with compositions by Pt. Amarnath. The G.M.Durrani duet has been a favorite of mine.
G.M.Durrani was a much sought after a highly paid singer of his time.
However, arrogance and un-proffessionalism brought his nemesis and he was later relegated to producing commercials for Radio to eke out his living. This has been mentioned in Harish Bhimani’s biography of Lata ‘In search of Lata Mangeshkar’.
G.M.Durrani has also been a favorite of Naushad singing in some of his late 40′s and early 50′s songs.
His misdemeanor has been discussed by Lata Mangeshkar in her latest authorised biography by Nasreen Muni Kabir – ‘Lata in her own voice’.
Lata recounts how she was put-off by comments of Durrani during recording for Naushad’s ‘Chandni Raat’,for which she denied singing any duet with Durrani.Of course,Naushad obliged though Lata was a new-comer at that time.Perhaps he had already recognised the spark in Lata who was later to dominate the playback singing of Bollywood movies.
Veda, thank you for this very interesting information. Yes, that duet is very good and G.M. Durrani obviously had quite a nice voice. It’s unfortunate that he went through such a decline, and that (at least per these accounts) he contributed to his own ruin through his own unpleasant behavior.
