As far as I can tell, there’s no movie quite like it – but many borrowed from it or paid tribute to it, including, I realized, the last one I wrote about (it has tons of references).

I liked it. I didn’t like it quite as much as the Nargis-Kapoor films that I’d seen, but Nargis certainly is fantastic in this. And I admire the filmmaker’s effort, even though some if it drags out the high drama in a way that may be difficult for some people to take (even me at times). The film is always wonderful to look at…
This director, Mehboob Khan, was an interesting character too. If I call this guy an anti-capitalist, it’s not just from reading a lot into his movies. The guy put a hammer and sickle in his company logo. (Yes, he could do that in Bollywood in the 1950s. Don’t think he could have done that in Hollywood during those years.)
