I’ve listened to this/watched this countless times already:
“Zhan Zhanake Apni Payal” from the movie Aashiq (1962). Lata Mangeshkar on Padmini, music by Shankar Jaikishan. Movie directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, starring Raj Kapoor, Padmini and Nanda.
Then there’s this great song, which is related:
“Awara Aye Mere Dil” from Raat Aur Din (1967). Lata Mangeshkar on Nargis, music again by Shankar Jaikishan. Movie directed by Satyen Bose, starring Nargis and Pradeep Kumar.
I’ve learned that these songs are based at least somewhat on the Raga Yaman. (Though the connection is stronger with the first song, from Aashiq; with the second song, it’s less evident, except maybe in the main vocals.) This clip from Tripmonk’s page has a couple of guys playing a raga yaman, and also actually explaining it:
The musicians, by the way, are Sri Viram Jasanji on sitar, Sri Satish Prakash Qamar on Shehnai & Ustad Lateef Ahmed Khan on tabla.

The singer here is Kishori Amonkar, who, I understand, is one of the best known classical Indian vocalists around today. She is doing the raga in a much slower tempo here, but you can still hear the influences on the two fine filmi songs above, especially in the way that those songs begin.
There are different styles, variations, and parts of a raga or raag yaman. It’ll be a long time before I remember or understand what all the different terms that are used for these styles/interpretations/parts mean. And, I admit I’m more interested in those two movie songs. But it’s nice to know a little about the songs’ roots.
