Alaknanda2007/Nivedita has posted NINETEEN SONGS from this Hindi version of the classic Ellis R. Dungan-directed film Meera, which originally came out in Tamil in 1945. This film became a famous showcase for its carnatic singing star M.S. Subbulakshmi. I’ll be getting to some of her songs soon, but first I wanted to show this sweet scene, which includes another great artist from vintage Indian movies, Kumari Kamala (or Kamala Kumari or Baby Kamala – she was about 13 here, so it would be a while before she became Lakshman), playing Krishna. Once again, Nivedita has dug up some real vintage treasures for us. I’m wondering if there will be a post about this film on her blog too…
Thanks for the links and the post.
The Movie ‘Meera’ contains some of the exquisite compositions in the voice of M.S.Subbulakshmi.Later HMV released selections of these re-recorded Meera Bhajans by M.S.Subbulakshmi in 1965 and remains the perennial best seller along with her ‘Venkatesh Suprabharam’ and ‘Vishnu Sahasranamam’ released in 1970 is played every morning in households in India and alsewhere. The Album has a introduction by C.Rajgopalchari whose Tamil poem ‘kurai onrum illai’ (Lord I have no regrets…) sang by MS is very popular. The voice which has been hailed as the ‘divine manifest’ is revered.
Coming to Dilip kumar Roy , the inspiration behind the Music for ‘Meera’,he was a multi-faceted genius. He was a ardent follower of Sri Aurobindo and was considered his foremost disciple. The correpondences by Dilip Kumar Roy with Sri Aurobindo itself accounts for four volumes relesed by Mira Aditi which gives an insight into the personality of Sri Roy.
He was a composer, singer, lyricist, poet, writer and philosopher with equal brilliance.HMV has brought a compilation of his songs a few years back.
However most of his recordings are available with his Ashram at Pune.
