Not everything I like to listen to has to have synthesizers. For instance, there’s a lot of stuff I like over at Awesome Tapes from Africa… However, there is a lot of electronica in which I’ll find some of that fine more-traditional music included. I think I’ve mentioned a few examples already. Right now, I’m thinking of Natacha Atlas and Transglobal Underground. Because, if you listen to the Awesome Tape by Faiza Ahmed, you’ll hear a part near the beginning that very closely resembles a few seconds at the beginning of TGU’s “Taal Zaman.” (Plus, I’m reminded a little – though maybe not as much – of Natacha Atlas’ “La Lil Khowf.”) Anyway, I have to agree with Thursdayborn’s assessment that this tape is “totally sweet.”
Also well worth mentioning from the current page is a tape by La grande Vedette Malienne Kandja Kouyaté et l’Ensemble Instrumental du Mali, whom Thursdayborn (who obviously has some talent for description) accurately describes as “so smokey and dark and surreal.”
And there’s plenty more to look forward to in this blog.
